They removed the privacy feature from their product suddenly and without notice.

I asked them what had happened, and they told me that it was superfluous because web browsers incorporated this functionality.

I told them that since I use multiple browsers, the privacy feature was not superfluous to me. Since this feature required no further development, and no ongoing updates, there was no reason to remove it.

They replied, basically, T.S., and refused to refund my money.

IMHO, this is equivalent to false advertising, because I bought the product based on features that they removed from the product for no reason — and I don’t patronize companies that pull a bait-and-switch like this.

Caveat emptor.

A sad piece of junk – M. Hamann –
The two reviewers before me were lucky, their systems actually booted. Upon install ZA quickly sent me to a BS. Although my system did reboot without the dreaded oD part of the BS, ZA slowed my boot up to around 3 minutes, before requesting permission for its own files to access the internet for updates. After at least 150 clciks to allow access, I hit reset and did not allow ZA to boot on the next log in. Customer support is great at recommending you to pay a minute for support, but their forums are HEAVILY censored, so you HAVE to call if you can’t figure things out on your own. I’ll even go back to Norton after this experience…sad to see a quality product a few years back fall so hard now.

Regret purchasing – C. Weaver –
Significantly slowed my web access and made my Opera browser practically unusable, especially when accessing Ebay. After a few weeks accessing Amazon through Opera caused the system to lock up for several minutes until an error message popped up stating there was a problem with vsmon.exe and this message continued to pop up even after acknowledging it. A quick Google search showed this to be a common problem for ZoneAlarm Pro.

A check on their website listed phone support for .00 a minute (that’s 0 per hour). Their e-mail help advised me to uninstall and re-install their software. I had already done that to no avail and decided that the uninstall part of their advice was the only part to accept.

Spyware. Unusably buggy. – Graham –
The first time you start ZoneAlarm after you install it, it phones home by opening up a web page with all sorts of tracking and profiling information about you and your computer. It sends the install key, then it sends stats about what you have installed, and of course your computer IP. It doesn’t ask whether it may do this and it bypasses all its locks in order to do it. Neat trick for a program someone has just bought to lock down spyware isn’t it?

After that it proceeds to make Vista completely unstable. Explorer crashes when I enter “v” on the start menu. ZA and Adobe Version Cue don’t work well together apparently. There is a persistent bug lasting back two versions where it thinks every program is trying to access the dns port of random servers. e.g. notepad.exe will apparently want to access port 53 of cnn.com if that’s what you accessed last.

The expert firewall rules don’t work. After adding a rule to allow all dns requests, you still get the popups every time.

Another new bug with 2009: if you want to have ZA ask every time you start a program (e.g. firefox.exe) previously it would ask once and then never again till you restart it. Now ZA will pop up a request popup every few minutes.

Sometimes apps just lose their network connection. One minute it can see the network, the next moment it loses it, while other apps keep on working.

Great product. I have it set up on two laptops and also on my tower server. It runs flawlessly and quickly, much quicker than older versions. It has also picked out whatever viruses come via email, music downloads, etc. The updates are automatically and easily downloaded. I highly recommend this product to anyone using a PC.

Worst decision I could have made – Cara Davis – New York
I had the 2005 Norton antivirus on my computer. This week, a notification popped up telling me I could upgrade to 2008 for free. I said “sure”. During the installation process, the old version is uninstalled and then the new version installs. The program froze while installing and my computer had to shut down. When it came back, everything appeared to be OK. Then I noticed that my virus protection kept turning off and I had no way to turn it back on. I didn’t even have a fix now button. I tried going online to get customer service, but I use firefox and they want you to have internet explorer to chat. Sorry, not doing that. I tried to email them, but instead it would change the screen and say I need to talk to someone on chat. I couldn’t email anyone a simple question! I looked for a phone number and noticed that now you have to pay just to talk to someone in India. Uh, sorry, no! I never paid in the past. I went all over trying to figure out what the hell was wrong and finally decided to uninstall and reinstall. Also a big mistake.
Upon reinstalling, everything looks like it’s going well, but it isn’t. The program wants a file from my computer that is missing and the path to get there is listed in a separate window, but when I click “OK” it shows another window transferring the file, but it’s frozen. Nothing I do works and I can’t find the file on my computer when I search for it myself. So now, I renewed my subscription about 2 months ago so that I could waste the money I don’t have because I don’t currently have a job. AND I lost the antivirus protection that I had that worked fine. You cannot get tech support for this software anymore- you get forced into going around in circles. If they are going to give you a free upgrade, they should at least not screw you over with it and then make it impossible to contact them about it. I downloaded free AVG and my computer is faster and protected. I suggest you do the same.

Symantec Will Not Honor the 3 Licenses- Only One – HAD2 –
I installed one of the 3 licenses for NAV 2008 on one computer, but when I went to install it on a second, the keycode was rejected, and, after spending an hour chatting with a barely literate third world tech support guy named “Vivek”, he refused to admit that you can actually purchase 3 user licenses from a vendor. He was only aware of single and 5 user licenses, and he based his position entirely on this. So, if you pay for 3, you may only get one license. Buyer beware. This is an awful company to deal with, with even worse support. Stay away.

I ran this program for a while but it seemed to slow my computer down. Did what it promised but it was a hard drive eater.

Good but not the best – Arun – Washington, DC USA
The product does what it’s supposed to do: 1) Good A/V scanner, 2) Protection against malware/spyware, and 3) almost complete user control. There are a few negatives though: 1) At boot up, it’s really slow to load on a 64-bit Windows machine and sometimes the Windows A/V monitor actually says I don’t have any A/V program?!?! Even though I have set it at Auto, the updates are not pulled in automatically. Sometimes I have choose manual updates. Complete user control can either be a plus or minus. If you set the scanner to notify you before any program installs itself, well you better have the strength to click through so many OKs. We all know it’s not just one file being installed but rather multiple ones….quite a painful process.

It’s a decent product but requires more refining. There are others that you should evaluate.

Renewal system from Hell – Gary C. Thomann –
I have had bitdefender antivirus for 2 years and have been through two renewals. Each involved 2 weeks of torture – emails back and forth to support, phone calls, ID keys that didn’t work, multiple charges to my credit card and just plain frustration. I don’t understand how any company can make such a simple process so painful. With bitdefender you won’t worry about virus’s; your mind will be swampled with worry that the renewal process is eminent.

so, I had BitDefender 2008 anti-virus 3pc/3yr — can’t complain.
then! since it expired I’ve purchased th 2010 anti-virus 3pc/1yr.
but! one PC now can’t boot and on the other PC the BitDefender
didn’t register with Windows Security and it asks for the product
key each time we boot, and still shows “Trail” in its banner.
and! it can’t download updates w/o any meaningful status, just
punt… it seems that this vendor is so bent on expired license
from 2008 version that it left a trail of inconsistent setup
and drivers, or whatever. likewise with my son’s laptop.
so! I told him to remove it clean and download a trial from
AVG or Trend or any other but this one. it’s Windows XP and
Vista PC (s) that are now on the floor, after an install
session of this product! please, don’t try this on your PC!
